One Who Has Authority

Scripture: Mark 1:14-28 - Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him. And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching. And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.

Main Objective: To grow in our understanding of the gospel mission of Jesus and learn what it takes to join Him in it.

1. The Mission of Jesus.

Great things don’t often happen by accident. There needs to be an intentional mission doggedly pursued, protected, and executed.

While John’s mission was to make way for the Messiah – the Messiah’s mission was to make a way for our salvation.

Mark 1:14-15 - Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”

-Jesus is announcing the arrival of the Messiah – He was here in the flesh and it was time to repent and believe in the gospel.
-The Apostle Paul will later preach the same thing that Jesus is saying here. Listen to (SLIDE) Acts 20:21 - testifying both to Jews and to Greeks of repentance toward God and of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.
-Repent and believe was the message of Jesus.

2. The Call of Jesus for others to join Him on His mission.

If you have been saved, you have been recruited to the mission of Jesus…

Mark 1:16-20 - Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.

A. Jesus sought out His disciples and invited them to follow Him.
B. Jesus said, “follow me”. This is what discipleship looks like – following someone and doing things the way they do them. This was the way Jesus made disciples - multiplication through mirroring.
C. There is a cost to joining Jesus on mission.
Luke 14:25-33 - Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them, “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.

D. What has the gospel mission cost you? If it hasn’t cost you anything, you aren’t on it.
E. The disciples were to multiply – as are we. 2 Timothy 2:2 - and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.

3. The Authority of Jesus to carry His mission out.

Jesus’ mission was to offer salvation by being the perfect sacrifice. Who can offer you salvation except for God Himself?

Mark 1:21-28 - And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching.

A. Jesus was teaching His own lessons about Himself, so He taught with authority.
B. Anyone can act as though they have authority – but Jesus proved His authority in miracle after miracle.
C. The people who challenge the validity of the miracles are challenging the authority of Scriptures. Anyone who says that there are errors in the Scriptures or what they report didn’t actually happen – have made themselves the final authority.
D. The demons knew exactly who Jesus was and knew He had authority over them.
E. How does this apply to us? We can share the gospel with authority just like Jesus. Why? Because we have His authoritative Word and we have our own stories of His working in our lives!

Main Objective: To grow in our understanding of the gospel mission of Jesus and learn what it takes to join Him in it.

Pastor’s Challenge:

As we see the beginning of the gospel work of Jesus – I hope that we are reminded of what important work it is! We have hope because of it!

1. Jesus’ mission was and is the same – your salvation.
2. You have been called to join Him on this mission!
3. The Son of Man has authority over everything.
